Students at the Brandeis School of Law may enrich their program of legal study through international experiences and clinical externships.
International Study
Students are exposed to a global faculty through teaching and research exchange opportunities with law schools in England, France, Germany, Finland, South Africa, Morocco, India, Japan, China and Australia. The law school also offers a number of courses focused on international legal issues complemented by guest lecturers and visiting professors from law schools around the world.
Clinical Externships
Through the clinical externship program, upper-level students perform law-related work and gain practical experience under the supervision of faculty and members of the bar. Externships provide opportunities to work with judges, represent clients through Legal Aid, and the Center for Women and Families, prepare and try cases through criminal justice agencies such as the Public Defender’s office, or work on tax law issues with the local office of the Internal Revenue Service.
Distinguished Lecturers
The Wilson W. Wyatt Distinguished Speakers Endowment funds two major lecture series each year, the Brandeis series and the Harlan series, bringing in national speakers from many different backgrounds and professions.
Brandeis Medal and Lecture Series
This lecture series honors a recipient chosen for his or her devotion to economic, social or political justice and for advancing the cause of public service in the legal profession. The recipient delivers a public lecture as part of the award. Past honorees include Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, civil rights advocate, Congressman John Lewis, former Attorney General Janet Reno, and former Senator Howard Baker.
Harlan Lecture Series
Named for distinguished Kentuckian and Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan, this series brings a nationally renowned speaker to the law school each year. Harlan lecturers have included Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, past American Bar Association president N. Lee Cooper, ABC News senior correspondent Bettina Gregory and CUNY President Gregory Williams.
