The Network Center for Community Change Needs Students for Outreach Program
pThe Network Center for Community Change is once again gearing up to do door-to-door outreach to property owners who have unpaid property taxes. The goal is to help homeowners avoid having those delinquent taxes be sold by the Jefferson County Clerk to third party purchasers. A sale to a private individual or business will mean more fees and costs will be added to the tax bill. /ppIf you are interested in doing grassroots outreach as a public service, this is an important area of service and you will learn about a rather obscure area of the law that affects thousands of Jefferson County residents each year. /ppThe outreach program will begin sometime in April and will run through the summer. If you are interested, please contact Jina Scinta at a href=mailto:jina.scinta@louisville.edujina.scinta@louisville.edu/a to sign up to receive public service credit. Further details will be provided to those who sign up./ppnbsp;/p

Professor Cross Presents Trademark Remedies in Japan
div align=lefta href=/faculty/john_crossJohn Cross, Grosscurth Professor of Law,/a recently delivered a distinguished lecture to the Faculty of Law at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. The talk was titled “Extraterritoriality of Trademark Remedies” and presented the basic thesis that even though trademark rights are generally confined to the borders of the United States, a court dealing with a claim under U.S. trademark law should be able to consider foreign sales in calculating damages—provided those sales affect the goodwill of the trademark owner.br /br /In attendance were the Hokkaido University Faculty of Law, certain graduate students and invited guests from universities and industry in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Professor Cross spent three days in Sapporo where, in addition to the lecture, he met with several graduate students concerning their Ph.D. theses./div

Congratulations to the National Trial Team!
Please join the Moot Court Board in congratulating the University of
Louisville School of Law's National Trial Team on a stellar performance
last weekend. Led by coaches Robert A. Riley and Jessica Schulte, the
team of Samantha Constantine, Naomi Warnick, Lacey Gullett, and Pete Lay
went head to head with several law schools in the Regionals for the
National Trial Competition hosted in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The team of
Lacey Gullett and Naomi Warnick argued admirably and were complimented
for their thorough grasp of both sides of the case as well as their
ability to win several hotly contested evidentiary disputes within the first
several rounds. The team of Samantha Constantine and Pete Lay advanced
to the quarter-final round after sweeping all the ballots in the first
and third preliminary rounds of the competition. In the quarter-final
round, Samantha Constantine began the round with an opening statement
that presented quot;like a force of naturequot; and Pete Lay concluded the round
with a closing argument that received three perfect scores from the
three judges. The two were narrowly edged out by the trial team from the
University of Kentucky law school that eventually went on to win the
regional competition. The Moot Court Board is exceptionally proud of all
the competitors and extends many thanks to the coaches, facilitators,
and guest judges who helped the team prepare for the competition.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN seeking 2013 Summer Legal Intern - Inhouse
pLegal interns at St. Jude spend a Summer immersed in a unique culture where basic, translational, and clinical research are all housed on the same campus as a robust hospital, where biochemists, computational biologists, geneticists, and statisticians routinely interact with specialists in infectious diseases, oncology, pharmacology, radiology, surgery, and hematology (including non-malignant hematologies like sickle cell disease), among others. Interns will work with a number of lawyers, both in-house and (with supervision) outside counsel, on substantive projects in many aspects of the law – some of which will be up to the intern’s interests – including health law, business transactions, risk management, international law, intellectual property, and even shaping law and regulations at the State and Federal levels. We take our mentoring obligations very seriously (and enjoy it!), so every assignment comes with plenty of context and follow-through opportunities for the interns, and client interaction is plentiful. Moreover, interns will find themselves routinely included in meetings of all types for educational purposes, not because there will necessarily be any follow-up work for the intern./ppFor additional details and how to apply, go to Symplicity. The deadline to apply is February 28th./p
