Developing Career Goals

Thoughtfully developing career goals is extremely important. The Career Services Office provides a number of informational programs designed to assist students in conceptualizing their career path. Each year general sessions include topics such as:
• Judicial Clerkships - Faculty members and judges present the career benefits of taking a judicial clerkship immediately after graduation; faculty members provide individual guidance. Sessions on application procedures and individual assistance are also available.
• Department of Justice - DOJ representatives explain the vast opportunities within their Summer and Honor's Programs plus other options for government employment.
• Employment Law - Members of the ABA Section on Labor & Employment Law discuss the variety of experiences possible in this area of legal practice.
• Department of Public Advocacy - Several DPA lawyers provide information about the various populations they assist and how they serve them.
• Practicing in Solo & Small Firms - Experienced practitioners discuss the advantages and challenges of practicing law in these arrangements.
• Alternative Uses for a Law Degree - Lawyers describe their unusual career paths and the practical benefits they've realized from their legal educations.
• Interviewing Skills - Representatives from firms share savvy advice for effective interviewing. Also, experienced students conduct individual mock interviews.

Several sessions, targeted to first-year UofL students, are offered annually to enhance each individual's own understanding of his/her career development process.
• Job Search Assistance - A one-hour class in November that focuses on professional career building, resume writing, contact making, and other networking hints for the holidays.
• OCI Orientation - All 1Ls are invited to lunch or dinner to discuss OCI procedures, appropriate cover letter and thank-you note content, targeted position searches, and summer employment options.
• Career Day - Legal Areas of Specialization. Organized by a committee of first-year students and attended by all 1Ls, Career Day includes about 25 practitioners who present information about their specific practice areas. Often, continuing students participate again.
