The next Louisville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section meeting will be held on July 22, 2009, at noon. The meeting will take place at the Louisville Bar Association located at 600 West Main Street. At the next meeting they will discuss the section's involvement in the Kosair Children's Hospital Foundation's 2009 BMW raffle, the summer associates program, newly admitted lawyers' cocktail reception at the LBA, and their fundraiser at the Green Building.Law students are encouraged to attend. This is your opportunity to participate in Orientation 2009 Community Service Day. Your Student Bar Association officers have planned a number of service events and we hope you'll all choose to participate. The community of Louisville will benefit from these projects but you'll benefit too, in two ways: you'll feel good about your volunteer work and you'll get to know your workmates, i.e., your classmates and upper-level students, along with some faculty and staff members. We'll have everything from litter pick-up in the park to serving meals at a shelter to painting walls at an animal rescue center to assembling care baskets. Projects include:

As part of this year's student orientation, a volunteer project has been organized with Kentucky's Habitat for Humanity. Since space is limited, first-year students will receive priority. Where & When: Volunteers should arrive at the construction center at 1631 Rowan Street (one block north of the intersection of 17th & W. Main Street) at 8:30 AM. They will provide a brief introduction about Habitat before the group heads to one of their construction sites. Most of them sites are within 2-3 miles of the construction center. Volunteers are expected to work on site until 3:30 PM. What to Bring: Habitat provides all of the tools and materials. They also have plenty of water on site. A pair of work gloves is recommended. What to Wear: Dress in work clothes appropriate for the weather. Sturdy shoes are a must - work boots, hiking boots or athletic shoes. A cap is recommended on hot sunny days. Types of Construction Projects: Volunteers work on nearly every facet of home construction, helping with dozens of tasks including preparing the site for construction, framing, insulating, siding, hanging drywall, painting and landscaping, just to name a few. Lunch: Lunch is provided on Saturdays. Inclement Weather: It is rare that they cancel a work day due to weather but will do so if they feel the work conditions are unsafe. They will e-mail or call the team's leader if they need to cancel due to weather. Volunteers may also call Habitat's construction center at 583-0332 if the weather is questionable the morning of your workday. Release and Waiver of Liability: All volunteers are required to sign a release and waiver of liability which is attached. Volunteers under 18 must have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian. 2 CLE ethics hours have been approved by the Kentucky Bar Association. The University of Louisville will host the second annual Conference on Innovation and Communication Law Turku Faculty of Law, Drake University Law School, Michigan State University College of Law, and the IPR Center in Helsinki, Finland. This year's conference will focus mainly on the role intellectual property and communications law play in the dissemination of information. As a result, discussion will focus less on the creation of rights, and more on how the legal system helps (or hinders) the development of knowledge. For example, we anticipate one or more sessions dealing with licensing and franchising issues. Other possible topics might include the role of intellectual property registration, the law governing trade secrets and confidential information, remedy issues, and the special case of university inventions and works. Because many of the participants will come from countries other than the United States, proposals with an international or comparative law perspective are especially encouraged. Start: 5:30 pm
