Professor Nowka is currently researching issues relating to Revised Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code. His most recent article examines the statute of limitations for secured creditors' deficiency actions .  Past work includes an article that constructs a frame work to enable a secured creditor to sell repossessed collateral on eBay. Works in progress include a student handbook for UCC Article 9.

He served as a member of the Kentucky Legislature's U.C.C. Study Commission and Drafting Committee on Revised Article 9, and has spoken on Revised Article 9 seminars sponsored by the Kentucky Bankers Association, the University of Kentucky College of Law, and the Louisville Bar Association.

His honors include the University of Louisville Distinguished University Teacher Award, the University of Louisville's Provost's Award for Exemplary Advising, and the Law Alumni/ae Excellence in Teaching Award.

Outside the law school, Professor Nowka engages in activities that focus on service to the community. He is a fifteen-year board member of the Legal Aid Society, serving as board chair in 2002. He works with Project Warm to winterize homes of the elderly, disabled, or persons of limited income.
