The Tuesday forecast is for possible severe weather. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to monitor local media for the latest weather news. The UofL Alert system will be activated only if the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning for Jefferson County, Ky. UofL Alert includes emergency messages sent via cell phone text message, campus phones, UofL e-mail accounts and posted on the UofL home page. Because the forecast for February 5 includes a significant risk of more severe weather, faculty, staff and student organizations may wish to shut down their computers and printers. If we have a serious electrical interruption, shutting down will minimize damage.

For students and instructors in evening classes: The Law Library has a weather radio at the Circulation Desk. If you wish to check on the forecast, the radio is always on.

The UofL Women's Center will present the second annual Kentucky Women's Book Festival, Saturday, February 16, at Ekstrom Library. The festival will bring together Kentucky women writers and their readers. Highlights will include talks by Affrilachian writer Crystal Wilkinson and by Courier-Journal columnist Betty Winston Baye. Professor Tony Arnold's new book, Fair and Healthy Land Use: Environmental Justice and Planning, is the featured January selection for the American Planning Association's Planners Book Club. As a Planners Book Club selection, the association provides questions designed to initiate discussion about the concepts covered. Professor Arnold was also interviewed about the book and the role of environmental justice in land use planning for an American Planning Association news podcast scheduled to have been released during the week of January 14 on the APA website's podcast page.

At the 2008 AALS Annual Meeting in New York City, Susan Hanley Duncan finished her term as chair of the AALS Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning and Research by hosting a luncheon attended by almost 150 colleagues.

While in New York Duncan also chaired the Legal Writing Institute's board meeting and a meeting of the leadership from CLEA, AALL, SALT, ALWD, LWI, and AALS Sections on Clinics and Balance in Legal Education in an effort to find shared areas of interest and identify possible collaborations between the various organizations.

Professor Jim Jones' op-ed piece, "Community Challenge: Mental Illness, Stigma, and the Person in the Office Next Door," was published in The Courier-Journal on January 21, 2008.

Grace Giesel's article, "Client Responsibility for Lawyer Conduct: Examining the Agency Nature of the Lawyer-Client Relationship" was published at 86 Nebraska Law Review 346 (2007).

Jim Chen's article, "The Most Dangerous Justice Rides into the Sunset" (co-authored with Paul H. Edelman) made SSRN's TOP 10 Papers for Law School Research Papers in both Law & Economics and Public Law & Legal Theory (based on the past 60 days, November 23, 2007 to January 22, 2008). Chen is also ranked 63^rd in SSRN's list of most downloaded authors under the subject "law" for the past 12 months.

February 2nd -- Saturday morning from 9:00 to 1:00 -- will be Career Day 2008!  Session Selection/Registration forms are available in the student mailroom and in the Career Services offices.  As you know, all first-years are required to attend this event, but remember that upper division students are also most welcome to attend again.

 

When you look at the form, you will notice that there are some new specialty areas including Entertainment and JAG.  And of course, some of the presenters are new this year so you can benefit from additional information AND enhanced networking.

The Warren E. Burger Prize is awarded to encourage thoughtful practical scholarship in the areas of legal excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism. The American Inns of Court invites professors, students, judges, and other authors to participate in the writing competition by submitting an original, unpublished essay of 10,000 to 25,000 words on a topic of your choice addressing issues of legal excellence, civility, ethics and professionalism. The submission deadline is June 15, 2008.

The author of the winning submission will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and the essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review. The Warren E. Burger Prize will be presented to the author at the American Inns of Court annual Celebration of Excellence in Washington, DC on October 11, 2008.

Professor Jim Jones' article, "Surviving the Scourge of Schizophrenia: A Law Professor's Story," will be published in the Hastings Women's Law Journal.

Professor Jones has also been named to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Louisville board of directors for 2008.

Assistant Dean Keith Sealing was named to the Board of the newly formed AALS Section on Balance in Legal Education. The Section held its first meeting on Saturday, January 5 to discuss the meaning of "balance" in Legal Education in light of the issues raised in the recent publication of the Carnegie Report on Educating Lawyers and the CLEA Report on Best Practices in Legal Education. The Board will undertake the planning of next year's Section Event and a proposed newsletter or blog. 

Professor Lisa Nicholson was placed on the executive committee for the AALS Section on Securities Regulations.

At the AALS conference, Professor Russ Weaver gave a speech on comparative research and participated in committee meetings. He also reached agreements with publishers regarding three new projects.

Professor Judith Fischer has been invited to serve on a National Association of Women Lawyers committee to judge the organization's writing contest.

Professor Scott Campbell's article, "The Civil War Reminiscences of John Marshall Harlan," was published in the November issue of the Journal of Supreme Court History.

"Louis Brandeis: The People's Attorney" will air on KET1 on Tuesday, January 8 at 9:00 p.m. and again on KET2 on January 14 at 10:00 p.m.
