Four distinguished local attorneys who practice in the property law area will be panelists on careers in property Friday, March 30 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room 275. Pizza will be provided. The attorneys will discuss what it is like to practice in an array of real estate and property areas involving real estate transactions ranging from complex projects, such as Fourth Street Live and Liberty Green, to neighborhood and historic preservation issues to traditional transactions involving residential and commercial real estate. The attorneys are Fred Joseph (Stites & Harbison, a transactional lawyer focusing all aspects of real estate law including complex real estate transactions), Stephen Porter (known for his work on neighborhood preservation), Sharon Hardy (Weber & Rose, whose practice includes complex commercial real estate transactions), and Anne Scholtz (Borders & Borders, PLC, whose work focuses on real estate closings and other property law issues, estate planning and probate matters, and business formations and transactions). The speakers will discuss not only their work, but how they chose the career path and how new lawyers can chart their course. A summary of the speakers' bios is attached.

Depending on whether you are a rising 2L or rising 3L, Dean Urbach will be giving you valuable tips on what you can do over the summer to get ready for the fall hiring season. You won't want to miss this opportunity to get ahead of the game. This is a brown bag event, so please bring your own lunch.

The newly formed Business Law Society is holding it's inagural event this Monday, April 2nd, from 11:30 to 1:00pm. An impressive panel has been invited to discuss business law, the role of the corporate lawyer, what makes a business lawyer tick, what clients are looking for, how to get into this area of law, and so on.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a public defender externship with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy in Summer and Fall 2012. Externs will be placed in either the appeals division, in the office in Frankfort, or the trial division, in the offices in LaGrange or Shepherdsville. The externship requires a student limited practice license. Externs in the appeals unit may be involved in reviewing trial records, identifying issues for appeal, researching and writing briefs, and attending oral arguments. Externs in the trial unit may be involved in performing preliminary hearings, probation revocations, and juvenile trials and bench trials in district court. If you are interested, please contact Professor Jordan as soon as possible. Interviews with a DPA representative may be scheduled for Tuesday April 3, 2012.
