This year's Edwin H. Perry Fellowship recipients, Christopher Ballantine, Gayla Cissell, Claire Rogers, Abigail Fargen, Andrew Henson, Maria Teresa dela Cruz, Jacob Davis, and Catherine Head, spent spring break in mediation training at Just Solutions, Inc. As a mediation training and services group, Just Solutions exists to create, facilitate, and teach collaborative processes for managing conflict and building community.  

The free training is made possible through an endowment established by local attorney, Edwin H. Perry.

Our students will now be able to participate in mediations referred from the Jefferson County Family Court in conjunction with the Family Law Pro Bono Mediation Project.

Three projects have been chosen for the 2nd Annual Community Service Day on April 4.

The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund has organized a project at the Animal Care Society, Louisville's only no-kill animal shelter; the Women's Law Caucus has organized a project with the Family Scholar House; and members of the Environmental Law & Land Use Society have arranged a clean-up project with Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

We will also be collecting donated items for the Animal Care Society and the Kentucky Foster Care & Special Needs Adoption Program Recruitment and Certification program the week prior to the event.

Donations and monetary contributions are still needed for door prizes, food, and beverages for the kick-off party that morning. Please contact Virginia Smith if you'd like to help out.

"What You Need to Know About Clients"

The panel discussion addressed various client issues, including where to find them, how to keep the good ones, how to spot the bad ones, how to bill and how to avoid bar complaints.

Speakers included distinguished lawyers from large firms, small firms and the Kentucky Bar Association who are members of the Louis D. Brandeis Inn of Court.

Everyone should know about the extraordinary service of two of our students, Barry Dunn and Johnna Spicer and a recent graduate, Justin Fowles. Barry, Johnna and Justin organized and implemented a two-day mock interview program for our 1L students. 

The first day, led by Johnna, was held at the law school and involved 2Ls and 3Ls interviewing our 1Ls. This was the first professional interview for many of our first year students and excellent practice for the second day of the mock interview program.   The second day, led by Barry and Justin, involved the LBA Young Lawyers interviewing our 1Ls at the offices of Frost Brown Todd.

One of our 1Ls, Teresa Kenyon, told me that she had an actual interview the following Monday and having interviewed  the previous Friday and Saturday contributed to the success of the real interview a day later.

According to Holly Hudelson, another 1L participant, it can sometimes be hard to talk about yourself.  "The more you do it, however,  the more comfortable you become."  Holly's last professional interview was three years ago.

The program was excellent.  I was one who was unsure about BigLaw because I didn't know what to expect about the environment.  And, although our event Saturday didn't give a real glimpse into the world of BigLaw, it certainly inspired me nonetheless.  The attorneys I interviewed with were awesome and they gave me excellent feedback that I could implement immediately and benefit from.  I've already written them both thank you letters and let them know that I hope they will continue to support this SBA effort because it had such an impact on me and really to every fellow classmate that I have spoken with about it.  I believe the experience both with the students on Friday and the attorneys on Saturday will prove to make a huge difference in my interview skills when it counts.  I feel much more confident after these rounds of mock interviews and I would certainly recommend the experience to all future 1L's.  You guys did an awesome job!  Thanks again.

Students in the Central High School Partnership program, with the assistance of Professor Tony Arnold and UofL law students, presented a report on the revitalization of the Parkland Neighborhood to Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville. The report, which includes ideas and information about the community’s conditions, is the result of a year long program that educated the students in land use, environmental justice, and public health equity. The program was supported by a grant from the Louisville Metro Center for Health Equity.

Over $450 was raised at this year's Chili Cook-off, an event designed to celebrate the start of the 2008 UofL Cares Charitable Giving Campaign. The charities include Kosair Charities, Community Health Charities, United Way, Fund for the Arts, University of Louisville, and the WHAS Crusade for Children. Kudos to Jim Becker for providing the winning dish, Melinda Becker's Deer Chili (aka "Aunt Sarah's Moose Chili"). Many thanks to everyone who either purchased a ticket, provided a tasty sweet or savory dish, and/or helped with the set up and clean up. It would not have been such a success with out you.

Thanks to all who attended and/or contributed to making Lawlapalooza 2008 a great success.  We don't have dollar totals computed yet, but last night's event may have set a new record.  The winning bands were The Frank Galvin Experience (first place), 100% Legal (second place), and the law school's own Elvis Cardozo and the Attractive Nuisances (third place).

Many thanks, also, to all the students who attended.  We had a great turnout.  As an aside, if you're looking for a cheap, humorous Halloween costume idea, Dean Becker has a gently used pair of parachute pants for sale.

Lawlapalooza 2008, the Louisville law community's 4th annual battle of the bands, is tonight at the Phoenix Hill Tavern, 644 Baxter Avenue.  Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the first band begins at 6:30.

The Faculty Resource Center, in room 272, still has plenty of student tickets available -- just five bucks each, limit of two per student -- but they will only be available there until 12 noon today.  After that, students must purchase tickets at the door (same price, same limit) and present a valid student ID card.  General admission tickets are $25 at the door.

Lawlapalooza benefits the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation, which provides summer fellowships for Louisville Law students to work in the areas of family law, domestive violence and spouse abuse, and HIV/AIDS.

Come on out for fun, fellowship and great music -- and have a laugh at Professor Smith and Deans Hall and Becker.

This information will help our alumni get to know about the great new lawyers we are graduating this year. All law students graduating in August or December 2008 or May 2009 are urged to share a little bit about themselves with our alumni.
