Save the Date: Lawlapalooza 2008

Lawlapalooza, the Louisville legal
community's annual battle of the bands, will be held Thursday, October
2, 2008, at the Phoenix Hill Tavern. This fun-filled evening of music
benefits the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation, which provides summer
fellowships for University of Louisville law students to work in the
areas of family law, domestic violence and spouse abuse, and HIV/AIDS.

General admission tickets go on sale August 1 for $20 ($25 at the door) and may be purchased online at www.law.louisville.edu/lawlapalooza. Every purchase isn't just a ticket to a great time. It's a tax-deductible donation to the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation!

To compete, each band must have at least one member who is an
attorney or law student. In previous years, bands have run the gamut of
musical styles: from Irish folk, to rock and roll, to Klezmer. All
interested, or even curious, bands and musicians should check out this page for detailed information and exciting new features.

Public Service Opportunity: Improve the lives of at-risk children with disabilities

Volunteers are needed to work on a project to develop a Kentucky-specific consumer
legal information handbook targeted for grandparents and other relatives
raising children with disabilities. Understanding legal options and legal
rights is essential for parents raising children with disabilities. Without
this information many caregivers are unable to understand the options that are
available to help them help the children develop their abilities and live happy
and healthy lives. The handbook will include information on programs that
provide financial support, health care, personal care, supportive services and
education to families raising children with disabilities.

Volunteers will be assigned specific topics to research. The
topics will be broken down using questions frequently asked by parents of
children with disabilities, and the volunteers will be asked to develop answers
and resource materials to address those questions. Volunteers will need to
conduct research on the assigned topic including field research such as visits
to programs and experts to gather information and materials. There is no fixed
time or location for the work on this project, deadlines will be negotiated as
assignments are accepted. All work with be supervised by David
Godfrey, an attorney with nearly 9 years of experience in
elder law. An editorial board of experts will be available for consultation.
The editorial board will review all work from this project and provide feedback. The finished handbook will be widely
distributed across Kentucky
and will likely be used to train caregivers, attorneys and other advocates in
this important area of the law.

Project completion is planned for this
summer.

Central High School Students Meet Supreme Court Justice

On May 6, 2008, the University of Louisville's
Brandeis School of Law hosted a Kentucky Authors Forum conversation with United
States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. As part of the law school's Signature Partnership program, students
from Louisville's Central High School
were able to attend the forum along with UofL faculty, staff and students.
These high school students enjoyed a rare opportunity to meet with a sitting
U.S. Supreme Court justice. Following the forum, Justice Breyer took some time
to talk to the Central High students and to pose for a group photo.

Through the Central Law and Government magnet program,
students at Central High School have been provided a variety of enrichment
activities - attending moot court competitions, attending speaker events,
visiting the law school for a day of introduction to the law school, and
participating in a writing competition. Such activities are hoped to "spark the
interest" of students in becoming lawyers.

Students Offer Services to Community Organizations

As a member of the larger Louisville community, the University of
Louisville places a high priority on using its resources to strengthen
and transform the local community. Participating in public service
projects is common for UofL students, but some students took their
involvement a step further this semester by organizing group days and,
in some cases, embracing often-overlooked causes.

UofL’s Brandeis School of Law coordinated its first community
service day April 5. The idea came about when students voiced interest
in a school-wide community service project during the school’s
strategic planning process last year.
