The Diversity Committee of the KBA Young Lawyers Division and the Louisville Bar Association have partnered to host a Continuing Legal Education Event on Friday, March 22, 2013 (1 pm to 2:30 pm), titled, "Being an LGBT Attorney in Kentucky".
This CLE takes serious look at diversity in the legal profession in the 21st century and will explore the personal and professional realities of being a lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender attorney in Kentucky. The panelists will discuss the positive and negative experiences they have encountered in working in Kentucky's legal community because of their sexual orientation. The panelists will outline the current status of local, state and federal law pertaining to protection from sexual orientation discrimination and same-sex marriages. The issue of the best practices legal workplaces can undertake to have an inclusive environment focused on eliminating overt and obscure acts sexual orientation bias, such as the structure of certain employee benefit policies, will also be addressed. The CLE will include a discussion of whether gay or transgender lawyers/law students should be upfront about their sexual orientation with prospective employers and if they should or can keep their sexual identity separated from their work as a lawyer.
This event will be held at the Louisville Bar Association Center, 600 West Main Street in downtown Louisville. Please Note: Attendees will have to pay for parking. Spaces are available in a number of lots or garages near the LBA Center.
