TODAY!! Public Service Program Information Session - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and Teen Court
The Office of Professional Development will be hosting an information session for all students TODAY from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Room 175.
Nedra Young and Katherine Bartlett from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance ("VITA") program will be speaking to our students about how they can sign up to be trained to assist low income individuals with their tax returns during the upcoming tax season. Once students are trained they can then participate in tax clinics at various locations around the city.
We will also have a speaker who will discuss Teen Court. Teen Court is a legal and formal extension of Jefferson District/Juvenile Court. At each Teen Court session, a trial is held for a juvenile who has committed a misdemeanor. The jury determines the appropriate punishment for the juvenile after hearing from the prosecution and defense, including the juvenile. Law students meet with teens acting as prosecutors, defense attorneys or jurors to provide insight, help develop strategy, assist with development of direct and cross examination, or just answer questions.
These are great opportunities for any student who still needs to fulfill their public service requirement.
Pizza will be provided. See you there!
