You are expected to read those portions of the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations which relate to each day's assignment. It will normally be easy to detect what is the relevant statutory or regulatory material since chapters in the book often deal with only one Code section and refer to relevant regulations. In addition to the casebook, you should have a copy of the CCH volume of Federal Estate and Gift Taxes, Code and Regulations. Another volume of selected Code and Regulations, such as the West volume is acceptable although larger and less complete. All citations to ' refer to sections of the Code. Those looking for a helpful student text are referred to McNulty & McCouch, Federal Estate and Gift Tax, (West Nutshell-6th ed.) or Willbanks, Federal Estate and Gift Taxation: An Analysis and Critique (West 3nd ed.). Stephens, Maxfield, Lind, Calfee & Smith, Federal Estate and Gift Taxation (Warren, Gorham and Lamont - 8th ed.) is an extensive, up-to-date treatise for those in search of a more detailed analysis.
