Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts Jr. will speak at the University of Louisville as part of the McConnell Center's fall lecture series.

Roberts will deliver opening remarks before taking part in “A Conversation with the Chief,” a panel discussion with people who have studied and written about the U.S. Supreme Court, said McConnell Center Director Gary Gregg.

Panelists will include: the Law School's Dean Jim Chen, Tom Mackey from the History Department and Barbara Perry, a McConnell Center Senior Fellow and Supreme Court watcher from Sweet Briar College.

Roberts, the nation’s 17th chief justice, was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2005, succeeding William H. Rehnquist. Before that, he was a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for two years.

A Harvard University and Harvard Law School graduate, he also spent 14 years in private law practice and held positions in Republican administrations in the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of the White House Counsel.

Admission is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Law students, staff, and faculty are highly encouraged to attend.
