Harlan Scholar Program
In 1998, the law school created the Harlan Scholars program to attract outstanding high school students. The program will guarantee entrance to law school for students who demonstrate commitment to public service, leadership, and who have excellent academic credentials. Selected students who participate in programing, maintain a designated GPA, and score on the 75th percentile or above on the LSAT are automatically admitted to the Brandeis School of Law upon completion of their bachelor's degree. Ten students are awarded each year. Each year Harlan Scholars have an opportunity to meet and work with members of the law school and the Louisville legal community. Scholars attend lectures at the law school and may assist law faculty and staff members in interviewing candidates for the upcoming first-year law class. Harlan Scholars also host a number of social events and monthly programs on topics ranging from the admissions process and financial aid to practice areas. In addition, Harlan Scholars have been in community service projects, including the Santa's Court Toy Drive, held in conjunction with the Salvation Army and the Louisville Bar Association. In the past, Scholars have also raised money for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kentuckiana and helped the Legal Aid Society conduct phone surveys to learn how to improve the legal needs of underserved people in the community. As an undergrad I also had the opportunity to meet many of the most prominent jurists and attorneys in the country including three Supreme Court justices and two former presidential cabinet members. The friends I made during my time in the program were great support. ... They were my classmates, my friends and now my professional colleagues."
