Introducing GPS for Law Students

Many of you may feel lost or are not sure where your final destination will be.  The Office of Professional Development is here to guide you and get you headed in the right direction.  You may be asking yourself, “What tool do I need to achieve this?”    Never fear; with GPS, you can chart your course and navigate your way to a successful career.

Geography – Where do you want to work after graduation?  If the answer is in Louisville, focus on Louisville and establish a plan for obtaining volunteer or paid work your first summer.  Build on your experience and work for another local employer the following summer.

Practice Area – What type of work do you want to do?  Examples include all areas of law, policy analysis, risk assessment, legal editing, development (fundraising), teaching, ethics advising, lobbying and more.

Setting – What kind of organization or workplace do you want to be in?  Examples include a law firm, a non-profit, the government at every level, a publishing company, a hospital, a school, a business and more.
