Environmental Law and Land Use Board 2013-2014 Announced!

On behalf of the ELLUS Board for 2012-2013 school year, I am pleased to announce the Environmental Law and Land Use Board for the year 2013-2014.

President - Ella Neely

Director of the Environment - Gayle Johnson

Director of Land Use and Urban Development - Robin Rice

Director of Communications - Bailey Schrupp

Director of Events - Kathryn Cross

There are two positions which are still available and will be elected in the fall. These positions are Director of Finance and Director of Public Relations. I encourage anyone interested to run for these positions at that time.We are excited to see what this new group will bring to ELLUS in the following year!

Climate Security and the 100 Mile Lunch

On February 27th, at 12:00 in Room 177, Ms. Anna K. Murray, Esq. will be speaking about climate security. At that time, ELLUS will host the annual Hundred-Mile Lunch. Plates will be $5. Please come join us for this lecture and enjoy some local food! If you would like to contribute a dish, please email Ella Neely (le8687@aol.com) or Beth Robinson (leobeth2000@yahoo.com). ELLUS will also be selling Critical Mass Beargrass Bike Ride t-shirts from 2012 for $15.

Interested in a career as an Environmental Attorney or using your law degree for environmental issues? Please attend the ELLUS session on Wednesday, February 29th at Noon in room 275. Speakers will be Shane Benson with the Kentucky Public Service Commission, John Carroll with the County Attorney's Office, Bob Ehrler with LG&E, and Randy Strobo with Hank Graddy Law Firm in Midway, KY.

Pizza and soft drinks will be served outside of 275.

Beargrass Critical Mass Bike Ride

ELLUS will host its first, of hopefully many, critical mass bike rides. The ride will start in Cherokee Park and will follow along Beargrass Creek through Waterfront Park and end near 4th Street Live. The ride is approximately six miles and taken at a leisurely pace. The ride will begin at 10:00 a.m. The ride is free with a suggested donation of $20 for which you will receive a free T-Shirt. The money raised at this event will help get ELLUS members to APIEL and other conferences this year!

Registration is now open for the 2nd annual Appalachian Public Interest Environmental Law (APIEL) conference at the University of Tennessee College of Law. APIEL welcomes law and policy students, attorneys, community activists, scientists, and policy experts for a weekend of workshops and panels focused on exchanging information and fostering collaboration on the most critical environmental law issues of our time. The APIEL conference hopes to create a common ground for community organizers, lawyers and researchers to communicate, educate each other and have fun. For students, APIEL is a chance to network with leading lawyers, professionals, and community activists who are fighting for environmental justice and economic transition in central Appalachia.

Topics Include:
● Mountaintop removal and strip mining
● Citizen enforcement of Tennessee water law
● National Pollutants Discharge Elimination System Permits
● “Lands Unsuitable for Mining”: citizen victories
● Endangered Species Act
● Creating mineral tax trust funds for economic diversification
● Activist-attorney relations
● “Know your rights” as activists and as the attorneys who represent them

Cost
Attendance fee: $65 (includes pizza on Thursday night).

All other meals, transportation and lodging are the responsibility of the participant. Participants who are only attending part of the conference may pay by the day.

ELLUS Elections Today

The Environmental Law and Land Use Society will be holding a meeting this afternoon, at 4pm in room 071, to decide on proposed changes to our constitution, and (depending on the outcome) to hold elections for some positions.

Forum Featuring UofL's Sustainability Expert

Justin Mog, UofL's sustainability expert, will speak to the law school about how we can get involved in the university's sustainability issues on campus.

A selection of soups will be provided by Soup ByCycle on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please bring your own beverage.
