Transactional LawMeet Competition 2015 Participants Sought

Transactional LawMeet Competition

2015 Participants Sought

The 2015 Transactional LawMeet® is the premier "moot court" experience for students interested in a transactional practice. The competition is designed to give law students “hands-on experience” in developing and honing transactional lawyering skills at three distinct phases:  original drafting; document review and comment; and negotiation.  Though much of the work takes place during the first half of the spring semester, the competition begins on December 12, 2014, when the Case Statement is published and sent to all participating.  Specifically, each team must participate in the client conference calls to finalize their draft, before delivering the proposed agreement to the opponent (due February 6, 2015).  Thereafter, each team must undertake a document review and prepare a mark-up to each draft agreement submitted by the opposing teams they will encounter at the Regional Meet (due February 20, 2015).  Finally, all teams meet to negotiate the contours of the deal at the Regional Meet on February 27, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois.

Any student interested in participating in the 2015 Transactional LawMeet is invited to submit his or her statement of interest and general availability to Professor Nicholson at lisa.nicholson@louisville.edu. Your statement should reference: a) why you are interested in the Transactional LawMeet Competition Team; b) any experience you have had with drafting and negotiations (including any past or current classes, externships or other work experience); c) your time availability for team meetings and practices during the evenings and perhaps on weekends from mid-December through, at least, February 2015; d) your cell phone number and your email addresses. You may attach your resume if you would like but it is not necessary.

The deadline for the statement of interest is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 23, 2014.  However, if you have limited drafting and negotiation experience (or if you simply would like to increase your selection chances), you may also submit a response to the “Exercise” – copies are available from the envelope that is thumbtacked to Room 262’s door.  Please return the completed Exercise no later than noon on Friday, September 26, 2014.

Thank you for your interest!

Negotiation Participants Sought!

Negotiation Competition Participants Sought

Students who are interested in participating in the ABA Law Student Division 2014-15 Negotiation Competition are invited to submit their expression of interest and availability to BOTH Professor Tony Arnold and Professor Mary Jo Gleason (the co-coaches of the teams) at toney.arnold@louisville.edu and MaryJoGleason@kycourts.et.  It is very important that you send an email to BOTH Professors Arnold and Gleason.  Your Message should include: a) why you are interest in the Negotiation Competition Team; b) any experience you have had with negotiations (including any past or current classes or other experience); c) your time availability for practices in the evening and on weekends during September, October, and early November; d) your cell phone number and your email addresses.  You may attach a resume if you would like, but it is not necessary.  The deadline of expressions of interest is Noon on Thursday, September 18th.

We will take 2 teams to the regional, which will be either October 31 to November 2 (Friday to Sunday) or November 7 to November 10 (Friday to Monday).  The dates and location for our region have not been set yet.  Please note that the MPRE is November 7 and could possibly conflict with our competition; if you apply to be on the team, you are agreeing to be available then.  The selected participants must be available to travel during either time period (we won’t know which one until we know to which region we will be assigned), by available for practices (2-3 hours each) at least twice per week from September 22 to November 7, and be ABA Law Student Division members in good standing no later than October 1.  If we receive more expression of interest than the 4 spots available on the teams, we will give preference to student with negotiation experience, as this competition develops and requires advanced negotiation skills.  If you have questions about what participation in the competition is like, you might want to contact 3L Jeff Hellman, who competed last year.  Thank you for you interest!
