Apply for the 2014 DRI Law Student Diversity Scholarship

Application Deadline is Monday, March 31, 2014

DRI announces its annual Law Student Diversity Scholarship program, open to rising (2014-15) second- and third-year African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. The goal of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to two worthy law students from ABA-accredited law schools to promote, in a tangible way, the DRI Diversity Statement of Principle.

All rising second- and third-year female law students are also eligible, regardless of race or ethnicity. Any other rising second- and third-year law students who come from backgrounds that would add to the cause of diversity, regardless of race or gender, are eligible to apply.

To qualify for this scholarship, a candidate must be a full-time student. Evening students also qualify for consideration if they have completed one-third or more of the total credit hours required for a degree by the applicant's law school.

Two scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each will be awarded to applicants who best meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence
  • Service to the profession
  • Service to the community
  • Service to the cause of diversity

Applications must be received by DRI no later than Monday, March 31, 2014. Scholarship winners will be notified in advance and will be officially announced at the 2014 DRI Diversity for Success Seminar, June 12-13, in Chicago.

Legal Studies Institute -- Jump Start Your Legal Career in Washington, D.C.

We are now accepting applications for the 2014 Legal Studies Institute in Washington, DC, sponsored by The Fund for American Studies. I am writing to ask that you share the announcement below with first and second year law students as well as the leadership of your student organizations to distribute to their members.

The Legal Studies Institute (LSI) provides the opportunity for law students to gain a first-hand look at the American legal system through guaranteed legal internships, a constitutional law course, guest speakers and briefings, and professional development activities.

In today’s increasingly competitive legal job market, future employers require substantive professional experience.  LSI places students in engaging legal internships that allow them to further develop their professional skills and gain a competitive edge in the legal job market.  Move forward with confidence in your career by adding depth and experience to your resume.  LSI staff work closely with students to ensure that internship placement fits both their career interests and goals.

Top 5 Reasons to Intern with LSI this Summer:
(1) Gain real world legal experience to jump-start your legal career

(2) Practice your legal research and writing skills

(3) Explore areas of law that you may one day want to practice

(4) Develop professional relationships with contacts in the legal field

(5) Earn academic credit from Georgetown University Law Center or Ohio Northern University Pettit School of Law

For priority scholarship consideration and a 5% tuition discount, we encourage students to apply by February 6, 2014.  The final deadline is March 18, 2014.

“LSI was the most remarkable experience for which I could have asked. I met wonderful people, was placed in an intellectually stimulating internship, and was offered many professional opportunities. If I could, I would participate again in a heartbeat.”

Michelle Anderson, Louisiana State University Law Center

Legal Intern, D.C. Office of Administrative Hearings

“I was able to draft legal memoranda, respond to discovery requests, attend pre-trial settlement conferences, and even be on-site for my first civil trial while interning in D.C.  My law firm experience helped assure me that when asked to complete a task for a trial, I will be ready to perform quickly and effectively.  I am now confident that I can get a job in any law firm in any state that I choose to practice.”
