1L Elections

First year students,

I encourage all of you to vote in this week's 1L Elections.  Voting begins on TWEN at 8AM, Wednesday, September 29 and ends at 5PM, Thursday, September 30.  Each candidate has an earnest belief that they can best communicate your ideas and concerns to the Student Bar Association.  Take a good look at the candidates and decide for yourself!  Please remember to vote and good luck on your memos!

Final Exam Policy Survey

In an attempt to extend the amount of time between each exam during the finals period, Dean Arnold, myself, and others have proposed a new exam schedule.  The schedule essentially puts 24 hours between each upper level exam.  We would, however, like to know if students would support such an exam schedule.  On TWEN, there is a survey under the course name, Final Exam Policy Survey.  Please add this course and answer the simple question posed regarding favorability for such a schedule.  The survey will be up until Friday, October 21.  This will go a long way in helping us to determine whether we should implement such a policy.

Thanks and have a great week!

Honor Council Elections

3Ls/4Ls: The Honor Council will hold an election in order to fill a 3L/4L Honor Council Alternate position.  The voting will begin on Wednesday, September 28 at 8:00AM and will close on Thursday, September 29 at 5:00PM.  Votes will be accepted only on TWEN.  Please read the attached Fall 2010 Election Rules and fill out the Statement of Candidacy and return it to the Honor Council Chair, Brian Bennett, in person or by student mailbox, by 12:00PM on Monday, September 27.

Habitat for Humanity

In an effort to give back to the Louisville community, members of the Student Bar Association participated in a Habitat for Humanity project.  Members participated in a variety of tasks ranging from caulking the foundation to putting the final touches on rooms inside the house.  The house was Habitat's first LEED certified home.  Although law school is demanding, the SBA encourages students to make an effort to give back to the Louisville community.  Such efforts are rewarding and help to provide the balance that so often escapes us.

A Message for Student Leaders

Student Leaders:

Below you will find attached a letter outlining the policies that all Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) must follow.  Please read it carefully and if you have any questions feel free to contact me at or Dean Bean.

Kentucky Defense Counsel, Inc.

The Kentucky Defense Counsel, Inc. will be hosting its 2010 Fall Seminar at Newport Aquarium, Newport, Kentucky on Friday, October 8, 2010.  They would like to invite all University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law students to attend this program for $40.00.  If you are interested, please stop by the SBA office, Room 245, to pick up a brochure and registration form.

Student of the Month

Congratulations to August Student of the Month, Andrew Swafford and September Student of the Month, Marylin Osborn. Both students were nominated by their peers and/or professors for their continued efforts in and outside of the Law School. In addition to free admission to this year's Decedents Ball for you and a guest, you can find additional prizes in your student mailboxes.

If you are interested in nominating a student for Student of the Month, you may do so by accessing the following link:

Congratulations again to these two winners!

Student Athletics Tickets

Many of you that purchased student athletics tickets voiced concern over a new policy that the Student Government Association (SGA) had implemented.  The policy made it a requirement that students show their student ID before being allowed in a football or basketball game with a student ticket.  If you had a guest (not a UofL student) with you, that guest had to be accompanied by you into the game.  The purpose of the policy was to prevent non-students from using student tickets instead of buying them at the normal purchase price.

Although the policy may be a good one, it was implemented in the summer after students had already purchased their tickets.  For this reason the SGA, after further deliberation (and a steady barrage of emails and phone calls from concerned students), decided not to enforce the policy retroactively.  This year will serve as an educational year for the policy.  It will be enforced next football and basketball season.

If you have any questions regarding the policy, feel free to contact me.  Thanks and have a great week.
