Are You Planning to Take the Kentucky Bar Exam in July?

If you are planning to take the July 2010 Kentucky Bar Exam, be sure to stop by the Academic Success Office to pick up a handout explaining the application process.  Also, mark your calendars for a presentation on January 7, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. in Room 275, regarding the Bar application process.  If you have any questions, please contact Kimberly Ballard, Director of Academic Success (Room 212).

Academic Success Tip - Do You Have a Strategy for Studying over the Thanksgiving Holiday?

The Thanksgiving holiday is around the corner.  What does that break period mean for you?  This week’s tips will focus on how you can use your time efficiently and effectively for studying during the holiday. 

Be realistic about your holiday plans.  It is common to tell yourself that you will study at least ten times more than you actually can or will do.  Lay out a study plan that will be achievable rather than unrealistic.  Think about your travel mode, your travel time, your family expectations, your priorities for studying, and your need for balance.  Sit down with your calendar now and plan your study strategy for exams.

4:00 P.M., THURSDAY, OCT. 29 - DEADLINE TO SUBMIT REGISTRATION FORMS

The deadline to submit forms to Student Records for spring registration is 4:00 p.m, Thursday, October 29.

The School of Law is not using the wish list option this year for spring registration.

Academic Success Tip - Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.   Lack of sleep decreases the ability to study effectively.  When someone is tired, it takes longer to do the same task, concentration is impaired, and memory of material is lessened.  Also, you will need fewer “power” naps if you are getting sufficient sleep at night.

Academic Success Tip - Tackle Test Anxiety

Tackle any test anxiety that you have now.  There are a number of strategies for test anxiety.  The sooner you implement them, the better.

  • The deeper your understanding of the material, the more likely that you will remember it during an exam.  Study to understand and not just to remember.
  • The more “avenues” that you create to retrieve information from long-term memory, the more likely that you will remember it during the exam.  For example: read your outline; create a graphic; drill with flashcards; create hypos to illustrate; do practice questions; discuss with friends; etc.
  • Do as many practice questions as possible.  You will be more confident in your approach to the type of exam questions and more confident that you can apply the material to new facts.
  • Begin doing relaxation exercises now.  For tips on relaxation exercises, watch the stress management presentation that is available online at http://media.law.louisville.edu/.  
  • Get extra sleep during the last week of classes and exams.  You are more likely to remain calm during exams and remember material if you are rested.
  • If your test anxiety is especially serious or long-standing, make an appointment with the Counseling Center to discuss additional techniques.  852-6585

Study Abroad!

Ever consider studying abroad, as part of your legal education?  An information session is scheduled for noon on Wednesday, November 11, in Room 075.  Ms Virginia Hosono, Assistant Director, from the International Center will be there to answer questions, and our own Colleen Hagan will speak about her summer abroad experience.  Professor Kathleen Bean, Associate Dean for Student Life, will also attend.  Mark your calendars now!

Academic Success Tip - Review Your Outlines Often

Review; review; and then review.  You want the course information to be as comfortable as a baggy pair of sweats when you walk into the exam.  If you do not review material throughout the remainder of the semester, you will walk into your exams with information that feels like a stiff new suit instead.  Deep understanding and quick retrieval from memory pay off because of the time constraints of exams.  You can recognize the nuances in answer choices or fact patterns better, and you will not waste time trying to remember the material.  If you get in the habit of reviewing your outlines each week, you will have a better understanding of the material and will be better prepared for the intense course review before finals.

Academic Success Tip - Get Caught Up on Your Outlines

The time of the semester is here when you have no choice but to start thinking about exams.  There are only FOUR weeks of classes left.  You need to have a plan for exam studying or you will have too much to learn and not enough time in which to learn it.  Get caught up on your outlines quickly.  Your outlines will be your master documents for studying.  If you wait too long to get them up-to-date, you will not have enough time to review the material for deep understanding.  If you have the world’s best outline and do not study it thoroughly, you will not perform as well as you could on exams.  Your goal this week should be to catch up on your outlines and then outline every week. 

Academic Success Workshop: Preparing for Exams

The next Academic Success Workshop will be on Thursday, October 29, in Room 275.  The presentation will begin at 1:00 p.m.  Learn tips on how to prepare for finals, how to approach exam questions, common errors you can avoid, and more!  Snacks provided.

REMINDER: BAR PRESENTATION TODAY

Monday, October 26, Noon - Learn what you can do now to prepare for the Bar Exam.  Presented by T. Leigh Hearn, South Regional Director of Kaplan PMBR.  This presentation is open to all Brandeis law students and will cover the various components of the bar exam in multiple states, planning, a day in the life of the bar examinee, and strategies for the essay and multiple choice components of the bar exam.  If you have class beginning at 12:35 or 12:45, you are invited to stay until you need to leave for class.  The presentation will be in Room 275 from noon to 12:55.  Bring your lunch!
