Public Service Program Partners with LBA for Pro Se Devorice Clinics

The Public Service Program will be hosting a Lunch 'n' Learn on January 10, 2008, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in Room 175. Judge Stephen George and attorney, Melanie Straw-Boone, will discuss the Louisville Bar Association (LBA) Pro Se Divorce Clinics. Come and hear about this exciting partnership between the LBA Pro Bono Consortium and Family Court to assist underserved pro se litigants in securing their divorces. All law students are invited to hear about the project and Family Court. Furthermore, the Public Service Program will be recruiting 2L, 3L and 4L law student volunteers for the clinics. (It is not necessary to attend the Lunch 'n' Learn to volunteer for the clinics. However, you must sign up in the public service office and attend the below-cited training.)

The clinics facilitate pro se parties seeking divorces to complete the paperwork required to initiate a divorce action. Students serve as intake coordinators. In addition to students, there are volunteer lawyers from the Bar at every clinics to supervise the students. The LBA Pro Bono Consortium sponsors Self-Help Divorce Clinics at the Jefferson Judicial Center (700 West Jefferson Street) on the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The next training, which is required to volunteer at the clinic, will likely be held at 9:00 a.m. on January 25, 2008, immediately before that day's scheduled clinic. (We ask all students who sign up for this placement to volunteer for a minimum of six clinics during the semester.)
