General Advice: Advice for first year law students

Relax: Take deep breaths. You are going to be under a lot of pressure during the first year.  Try to find some time to exercise or to engage in an extracurricular activity.

Find a Study Group: If you are someone who likes studying with others, then try to find a small group of students to form a study group. Study groups can be a good source for support because your classmates are all going through the same process.

Get to Know Your Professors:
Visit your professors during their office hours or after class. Your professors are there to help you.  Take advantage of their office hours and their willingness to meet with you.

Ask Your Elders: 2Ls have gone through this already. Befriend a couple of upper-division students you trust and ask for their advice.

Be Nice to Your Friends and Family: Even though you are going through something that is very stressful and time consuming, don’t forget to make time for friends and family. Remember, that they may not understand exactly what you are going through, but they are there to support you.  Try not to be so hard on them.

Try Not to Stress When Grades are Released: It will not be the end of the world if you do not get the grades that you hoped you would at the end of the first semester.  Approach it as a learning experience and figure out what you need to do to improve for next semester.
