Summer Law Institute a Great Opportunity for Local Teens

Louisville-area students learned about the law and about legal careers during the 2008 Summer Law Institute, sponsored by the Louisville Bar Association, the University of Lousiville's Brandeis School of Law and Bellarmine University. The program, which was held in June, provides high school students with insights into legal careers, allowing them to observe court cases, speak to local attorneys, and participate in a mock trial.

Robyn Lurding's paper, "The Dormant Copyright Clause," won first place in the Nathan Burkan Memorial Compeition sponsored by ASCAP.  Julia Riehm McGuffey's paper, "The Mechanical Meltdown: Why U.S. Songwriters are Strugglilng for Just a Few More Pennies," received second honors.  Congratulations to both!

Professor James T.R. Jones presented "Severe Mental Illness, Stigma, and the Value of Treatment" for the Psychopathology class of the Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville, June 4, 2008.  

The May 2008 Women Lawyer's Association's annual legal ethics seminar was presented by Professor Grace M. Giesel.  Her presentation was titled "Recent Developments in Legal Ethics: Mass Tort Settlements, Metadata and Other Topics."

In addition to their regular duties, a number of law school faculty provide CLE presentations to the bar at the Louisville Bar Association. The following presentations were given during the first six months of 2008:

"Obtaining Racial Diversity in Our Schools without Using Race-Two Steps Forward, or Ten Steps Back" by Professor Cedric M. Powell was presented on February 28, 2008.

"Using the Internet to Locate Legal Information" by Professor Will Hilyerd was presented on May 12, 2008.

"Annual Spring Ethics CLE" was presented by Professor Grace Giesel on May 16, 2008.

Dean Jim Chen presented "Public Service Lawyering, By the Rules," to the local bar on June 4, 2008.

"Decoding the Kentucky Constitution" will be presented by Professor Kurt Metzmeier on June 30, 2008.

Kudos for June 11, 2008

Professor Jim Jones' paper entitled, "Severe Mental Illness in the Academy: A Secret Revealed" was listed on SSRN's Top Ten download list for Health Law Journals during April 2008.

Professor Lisa Nicholson spoke as part of a panel on "Holding Lawyers Accountable for Client Behavior" on May 29 at the ABA National Conference on Professional Responsibility. She was cited in the June 11, 2008, report.

Dean Jim Chen spoke to the Isaac Shelby Chapter of the University of Louisville Alumni Association on May 31. The event was picked up in the June 4, 2008, Shelbyville, Ky., newspaper, Sentinel-News.

In addition, Dean Chen has written a chapter entitled "Telecommunications Mergers," which will be included in Competition Policy and Merger Analysis in Deregulated and Newly Competitive Industries at pp. 52-83 (Peter Carstensen & Susan Beth Farmer eds., Edward Elgar Publishing, forthcoming 2008).

The 25th Annual Warns Labor & Employment Law Institute was held May 29 and 30. The conference was coordinated by professors Ed Render, Laura Rothstein and Mark Rothstein. UofL Law professor Ariana Levinson spoke at the conference.

Professor Laura Rothstein also spoke at the University of Cincinnati College of Law's April 14, 2008 program, Education Law Stories: The People and Principles Behind Education's Most Contentious Legal Controversies.

Torbeck Honored at Metroversity Awards Ceremony

Assistant Dean for Career Services Jerie Torbeck was honored at a Metroversity Awards Ceremony in the category of Outstanding Faculty of Adult Learners.
