The Department of Public Advocacy - Post Trials Division is in need of 1 to 2 students to assist them to help determine the current timeframes for completion of criminal appeals in Kentucky.
They need to obtain the following information about criminal cases decided during the period from July 1 2005 to the present, by fiscal year:
1. Which court rendered the decision?
2. Was it a DPA appointed case?
3. Notice of appeal filed by prosecution or defendant?
4. Is it a direct appeal from a judgment, or a post conviction action?
5. Appeal as of right, or discretionary review?
6. How many days from notice of appeal to certification of record?
7. How many days from certification of record to brief for appellant?
8. How many days from brief for appellant to brief for appellee?
9. How many days from brief for appellee to reply brief? (note, if none filed, then the result should be 15 days)
10. How many days from reply brief to decision?
In order to get this information, they are in need of someone to review all minutes from both the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court for the specified period, and then print out the "step sheets" (i.e., a printout of the court's docket, available online) for each of those cases. The research could likely happen from your home or campus library and could likely be completed by one student.
If additional hours are needed or another student requires hours, the next step would be to enter the information in a spreadsheet of our design.
The interested student(s) would be required to report to the Post Trial Division Director, Tim Arnold, and his Internal Policy Analyst, Jennifer Withrow. Participants would be subject to DPA's confidentiality policy in reference to their work on this project.

Commissioner Stuart Ishimaru has two unpaid law clerk positions available in Washington, D.C. He is one of five Commissioners who lead the agency by establishing policy and regulations, approving litigation in a variety of areas, and establishing and overseeing various programs and initiatives.
Law clerk assignments may include reviewing litigation recommendations and federal employment discrimination determinations, performing legal research and writing research memoranda on employment discrimination and administrative law issues, attending meetings with the Commissioner and his staff attorneys, assisting in preparing for public EEOC meetings, and drafting speeches.
A background in employment discrimination and/or civil rights law is preferred. Strong writing skills are required. Law clerks must be available for a minimum of eight weeks. On April 5, 2008, the law school community will embark upon its first annual day of collective public service. The initiative arose from student input into the university’s strategic planning process. The purpose of this event is to highlight the law school's commitment to community service, provide significant services, have fun, and make new acquaintances in our law school community.
Participants in the planning process identified three focus areas:

Women, Children, Homeless, & the Underserved
All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate by contributing donated items to one of the organizations listed below or to volunteer their time to one of the designated projects.
To kick off the event, we’ll be hosting a complimentary continental style breakfast in the Mosaic Lobby at 10 AM on Saturday, April 5. Coffee, juice, and pastries will be provided. Those present will be eligible to win one of the many door prizes!
Lend A Helping Hand
Volunteers may choose from a variety of projects. Sign up sheets will be available in each mail room and the Mosaic Lobby during the week preceding April 5th, or you may sign up online. You’re also welcome to show up that day without a reservation. Volunteers are encouraged to show their team spirit by wearing a piece of University of Louisville or Brandeis School of Law apparel.
The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund has arranged for a variety of activities including dock cleaning, rewiring kennel doors, and painting the new “get acquainted” space. This project will take place at a shelter near campus beginning at 11 AM. Volunteers will also receive a tour of the shelter and an opportunity to walk some of the dogs. The Environmental Law & Land Use Society has arranged for a clean-up project at Central Park. Volunteers will walk from campus to Central Park along Third Street and back along Fourth Street, cleaning up as they go. Contact Brian Pollock for details.
Departure time: 10:30 AM. It may rain, so dress appropriately. Garbage bags will be provided, but you might want to bring some gloves.

During the week of March 31 – April 5, collection bins will be placed in the Mosaic Lobby of the Law School in Wyatt Hall. Following, is a list of items requested by each organization.
During the months of March and April, the Center is collecting towels, washcloths, diapers, underwear, socks and bras. We’re also collecting cell phones & cell phone chargers. Additionally, you can help by donating goods that meet their immediate needs: cribs and mattresses, crib sheets, pacifiers and bottles, & infant toys.
Items include: toilet paper, conditioner, face wash, deodorant, dental floss, tooth brushes, pull-ups, Kleenex tissues, paper towels, sponges, soap, face wash, lotion, shampoo, household cleaners, napkins, tampons, maxi pads, light bulbs, lamps, children's coloring/activity books, computer printer paper, batteries for Leap Pad learning system, etc.
We’re collecting aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, newspapers, and cardboard.
The 3rd annual "Working In the Public Interest Conference" will take place at UGA Law on April 4 and 5, 2008. The conference is dedicated to bringing a creative forum for the discussion of practical approaches to lawyering that can best serve the poor. Pursuant to this mission, the organizers have planned a full day of panels, roundtable discussions, meals, and a career networking reception. The conference is free for students, and free student housing is provided.

If you are interested in participating in next year's Street Law Program at Central High School, please complete a "Placement Reservation" form by Wednesday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m. The forms are available in the Public Service Office, which is open, from 9 - 3:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. One can also access the form from the Public Service Section of the Intranet. The forms can be emailed, delivered, or faxed to Ms. Scinta. [Room 102, firstname.lastname@example.org, (FAX 852-0862)] This placement is open to sixteen students. Thus, if we have more than sixteen people sign up for the placement, we will conduct a lottery to determine those sixteen students. Further, we will establish a waiting list.
Important information for all students who plan on participating in Street Law - you are required by State Law to have a criminal background check, and you must be able to attend a mandatory training session on August 23, 2008 (Saturday) at Central High School. This training session will take at least six hours. Anyone who has already signed up who no longer wishes to participate, please let Ms. Scinta know.
There is an opportunity for current first- and second-year students to work in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development office in Louisville. This is a paid position, and the deadline is NOON - Friday, March 21.
